Flamingo Gardens has not always been the paradise that it is today. Just over a century ago, this elevated oak hammock was part of a series of islands surrounded by Everglades sawgrass marsh, and one of the most archaeologically and historically significant areas in Broward County. It was originally inhabited by the ancient Tequesta and later was a refuge for both Seminoles and runaway slaves. Drained in the 1900s for agriculture, the swampland became citrus groves and eventually the Flamingo Gardens we know today. This fascinating exhibit is not only a history of Flamingo Gardens, but a history of South Florida.

Funding for this project is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.
